Industrial Disc Brakes & Clutches

What are Disc Brakes?

A disc brake is a type brake that uses calipers to squeeze pairs of pads against a disc to create friction to slow down, stop and park a rotating shaft.

The energy of the rotation shaft is converted into heat which is dissipated into the environment and disc.

The development of disc-type brakes began in England in the 1890s.

In 1902, the Lanchester Motor Company designed brakes that looked and operated similarly to a modern disc brake system even though the disc was thin and a cable activated the brake pad.

However, it was not until the 1950’s, when the Jaguar Racing Team won the 24 Hours Le Mans using hydraulically actuated disc brakes, that this type of brake became accepted.

TWIFLEX, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Regal Rexnord, was founded in 1946 as an engineering research company.

In the late 1950s, when disc brakes were found to give performance advantages in the automotive industry, Twiflex recognised this technology would have far reaching industrial applications.

In 1951, Twiflex introduced disc brake technology for industrial applications, designing a range of calipers for use in the steel, paper and marine sectors.

So commenced a continual programme of innovative braking solutions, becoming global leader in industrial disc brake design and application, giving reliable performance.
